Hybrid Termites on the Rise: Could They Threaten Long Beach Homes Next?

A recent Smithsonian Magazine article has revealed troubling news for homeowners across the country: two of the world’s most destructive termite species—Asian and Formosan—have begun breeding in South Florida, creating a new hybrid termite that experts say could cause even greater damage and spread more widely than either species alone.

What’s Happening in Florida?

Researchers from the University of Florida have confirmed the presence of wild hybrid termite colonies. These super-colonies grow faster, cause more destruction, and may survive in broader climate conditions than their parent species.

The original hybrid was observed in a lab in 2015. But by 2021, entomologists began finding hybrid termites swarming in the wild—and by 2025, they discovered a mature colony in a Fort Lauderdale tree. The colony had likely gone undetected for over five years.

Why does this matter in Long Beach, CA? The warm coastal climate, dense urban landscape, and international shipping routes—including yacht and cargo traffic from Florida—could make our region particularly vulnerable.

What Homeowners in Long Beach Need to Watch For

Termites are already a concern in Southern California, but the potential arrival of hybrid termites raises the stakes. Warning signs of termite activity include:

  • Mud tubes on walls, foundations, or fences
  • Discarded wings near windows or doors
  • Wood that sounds hollow or crumbles easily
  • Unexplained moisture or leaks in crawlspaces or basements

Don’t wait until you see visible damage. A proactive approach can help prevent costly repairs.
